Sangyaw Festival Contest Guidelines – Pagdayaw, Pagsaurog, Pagrayhak

The official guidelines and criteria for the inaugural “Tacloban Sangyaw Festival 2008″ to be held June 29, 2008 have been announced.

Among others, the festival has set categories with major and minor prizes in the following:

  • Best Contingent (P500,000 top prize)
  • Best in Choreography
  • Best in Street Dancing (P200,000 top prize)
  • Best in Music
  • Best in Costume
  • Balikbayan Night Award


A total of 17 contingents have so far been identified and assigned accommodation in several schools around Tacloban City.

BEST CONTINGENT – OPEN CATEGORY

CRITERIA

* PERFORMANCE 25%
(Precision and coordination, fluency, alignment, focus,
balance, projection, rhythmic, and spatial interest)

* CHOREOGRAPHY 25%
(Creativity, artistry of steps, formation, style, and expression)

* COSTUME 25%
(Artistic choice of color and style, appropriate and relevant
to the theme/ritual)

* PROPS 10%
(Effective use of the props relevant to the interpretation
of the theme/ritual)

* MUSICALITY 10%
(Adherence to the use of drumbeats relevant of the theme)

* THEME, CONCEPT / RITUAL 5%
(Choice of material as to musicality, movement, qualities
and expressions, clarity of message and interpretation
to the dance movement)
TOTAL 100%

GUIDELINES

1) The dance entry must depict Filipino culture and tradition;

2) Concept or theme for costume and performance are left to the discretion of the participants based on their interpretation of their own festival;

3) Dance steps, music, costume, accessories and equipment of the dance should be in the context of the chosen theme or concept;

4) Live musical or percussion accompaniment must be used at a minimum of thirty (30) musicians and a maximum of fifty (50) members. Canned / taped music is not allowed.

5) The contingent must have a minimum of sixty (60) but not more than one hundred (100) performing dancers however, banners, props men or support staff have no limitations;

6) Appropriate footwear consistent to the theme / motif shall be used by all the participants;

7) All hand props shall be carried by the dancers all throughout the parade route;

8) Huge / big backdrops are allowed only on the main stage (Amphitheater);

9) Dance drama presentation at the Balyuan Amphitheater shall be limited to five (5) minutes only. Three (3) points shall be deducted from the total score against any contingent who violates this provision;

10) Time starts once the dancers move and step on the designated entrance area in the stage likewise the time stops as soon as the first set of dancers step down in the exit area;

11) The use of live animal sacrifices and use of infants or toddlers three (3) years old below are strictly prohibited. A three (3) points deduction from the total score will be imposed;

12) The use of flammable materials such as fireworks or pyrotechnics as part of the dance drama is strictly prohibited. A three (3) points deduction shall be imposed against any contingent who violates this provision; and

13) Compulsory presentation of the three (3) minute dance drama shall be made at the three (3) designated points of the parade.

14) Submission of the story line of the festival one month before the competition.

Minor Award for Best in STREET DANCING

CRITERIA

* PERFORMANCE 35%
(Precision and coordination, projection and dynamism,
fluency, alignment, balance and focus, rhythmic, and
spatial interest)

* CHOREOGRAPHY 25%
(Creativity, artistry of steps and floor pattern, style)

* COSTUME 20%
(Artistic choice of color and style, appropriate and relevant
to the theme/ritual)

* PROPS 10%
(Effective use of the props relevant to the interpretation
of the theme/ritual)

* MUSICALITY 10%
(Adherence to the use of drumbeats relevant of the theme)
TOTAL 100%

GUIDELINES

1) The dance entry must depict any theme or concept that is relevant to Filipino culture and tradition;

2) Only live musical or percussion instrument shall be used;

3) Dance steps and choreography should be progressive all through out the parade route to facilitate the continuity and orderly flow of the parade. Three (3) points shall be deducted for the total score against any contingent who violates this provision;

4) There shall be judges along the parade route to ensure the continuity of the performance; and

5) Props must be relevant to the theme and carried by the dancers.

* MUSICALITY 30%
(Variation, contrast of musical levels / dynamics

(Use of native materials)

* SHOWMANSHIP 20%

* DISCIPLINE 20%
(Behavior, spacing & alignment)

* COSTUME 10%
(Relevant of the theme / concept / motif)
TOTAL 100%

GUIDELINES

1) The use of indigenous or creative instruments from native like bamboo, leaves, woods, etc., is highly encouraged;

2) The composition must be within the minimum of thirty (30) and a maximum of fifty (50) drummers / instrumentalists. An excess will merit the five (5) point deduction from the total score; and

3) As an integral part of the contingent, instrumentalists must be in proper attire, relevant to the interpretation of their chosen theme / concept.

* OVERALL / VISUAL IMPACT 10%

GUIDELINES

1) Concept or theme for costume are left to the discretion of the participants based on their own interpretation of what is relevant to their own festival;

2) The use of indigenous or creative costume is highly encouraged;

3) Accessories and hand props including footwear must be consistent to the theme / motif the costume represents; and

4) The costumes must conform with standards of morality.
